Many avid motorcyclists choose to go abroad in order to find the most satisfying routes to ride, yet there are more than enough journeys in the United Kingdom that provide gratification for both the beginner, and expert rider.
A route that is becoming increasingly popular is the east-west jaunt from Kendal to Bedale on the A684. Not only does the route provide ample straight sections for high revs, it also offers some of the finest scenery Britain has to offer. Clocking in at around forty miles, the rider is treated to a comfortable trek across Cumbria and into the Dales. Something to note however is the plethora of stonewalls during certain sections of the route – many riders regard these as a nuisance when attempting to gather speed, yet others view them favourable, as a test or challenge of awareness.
In contrast to the rural approach, bikers can get a great deal of enjoyment from coastal routes, especially in the south-west. One particular journey in Cornwall, which runs along the A3083 from Helston to Lizard, is approved by many motorcyclists. It offers benefits for the sports bike and cruisers alike, with long straights for opening up the throttle, and fabulous sea views. Many regard the route as essential, if only for the harbour at Lizard, one of England’s most southerly points.
Fans of sweeping bends should look at taking a trip to Scotland, and specifically the route on the A713, between Ayr and Castle Douglas. At a reasonable thirty-five miles, the journey delivers on both scenery and on general riding experience; very little traffic through the hilly twists and turns provides opportunity to generate pace. Around ten miles from Castle Douglas, riders can enjoy the views and tranquillity of Loch Ken, in the heart of Dumfries and Galloway. The area boasts much accommodation and camping facilities; therefore motorcyclists may look towards sampling several routes during a weekend. Another trek, between Stewarton and Thornliebank on the B769, also in East Ayrshire, is close by, and is regarded as an exceptional ride.
